Process

How paper becomes paper.

Five stages, from loose fibre to a finished sheet. Swipe through the making.

Detail of the raw material the paper begins as

01 — Material

It starts with the material.

Cotton and textile material is opened, cleaned and prepared until it is ready to become pulp.

Pulp under agitation in the vat

02 — Pulp

The material becomes pulp.

It is worked with water and agitated in the vat. How long it is worked decides the softness and the surface of the finished sheet.

03 — Forming

A sheet takes shape.

Pulp is drawn out of the vat onto the forming surface and spread evenly. This is the moment the sheet gets its thickness.

Wet pulp handled by hand at the press

04 — The sheet

Water leaves. The sheet stays.

The wet sheet is lifted, transferred and pressed to take the water out. Every one comes out slightly different, and we leave it that way.

Handmade sheets laid out to dry across the workshop floor

05 — Drying

Left to become itself.

Sheets are laid out and left to dry in the open. Only once they are dry are they trimmed, sorted and finished by hand.
